Faux Fur Drying

We are asked repeatedly about cleaning faux fur and we have great instructions available in this collection of documents on how to proceed.

This article has been made public to warn our customers and anyone else who hopes to wash their faux fur about the results of not heeding our instructions to the letter.

We mention often that heat and agitation are faux furs worst enemy during the cleaning cycle. Many people fail to heed this warning and ruin their fur using a tumble dryer even with a no-heat or air-dry setting.

Friction

A two yard piece of dry faux fur tumbling in a dryer set on cool or air dry will quickly heat up the interior of the dryer to temperatures similar to a full heat cycle. Imaging the millions of acrylic fibers that make up the pile of your faux fur rubbing against each other and the walls of the dryer, this action is called friction and its the same as when you rub both your hands together to generate warmth. This friction heat is enough to destroy the guard fibers and curl the base fibers so that you faux fur ends up looking like a matted mess... destroyed!

The only drying solution

The only way is to hang the faux fur and allow it to air dry, it takes awhile but on a warm sunny day not much longer than 4-6 hours. And if you do it outside you double the benefit of saving energy with the freshness of the great outdoors.
