Make a Lampshade Cover
Our semi-translucent shaggy faux fur colors; White, Yellow, Orange, Pink and
Green work the best for this project as the images show below.
You will need
-
A cone shaped white paper or linen lampshade with a base of about 20 inches
wide (for example: model 1721540, Linen-WHITE, 8 x 18 x 12 WAL-MART).
-
One yard of our Shaggy faux fur.
-
10 feet of white cotton string, or 1/4 inch rubber elastic.
-
Pen or pencil
-
Scissors
-
Sewing machine
Follow these steps
-
Place your shaggy backing side up (fur down) on a large table
-
Place the lampshade on its side with the paper or linen seam down against the
fur backing. Orient the narrower part of the cone pointing into the middle of
fabric.
-
Do a dry run of rolling the lampshade around the fabric until the seam comes to
rest again against the fabric. Adjust the start point so that you can roll the
shade one whole revolution without going off the fabric.
-
Now do it again but this time roll it about an inch each time and trace the
outline of its movement both at the base and at the top. Don't forget to mark
the start point where the seam of the lampshade rested on the fabric at the
base and top. Do it also at the end of one revolution to get the other end.
-
Use a ruler to draw a line from the base mark to the top mark to create the
start and again at the other end to create the finish. You now need to trace
another outline 1/4 inch out from all lines to allow for the seam. (You can
also do this at the time that you roll the shade out)
-
Your drawing should have 2 arcs and 2 straight lines and should look like this.

-
Carefully cut the fabric backing only with a utility knife or nibble it apart
with very small scissors so that you don't cut too much fur.
-
Place the two straight edges together fur side in and sew 1/4 inch in.
-
Turn fur side out.
-
Sew with a zigzag stitch on the fur side and the string placed in the center of
the stitch so that the needle misses it with each stitch. Do both top and
bottom. You can also use the elastic instead of the string, maintain a slight
tension on the elastic while sewing.
-
Now place the cover over your lampshade and draw-in the string on the top and
bottom to gather in the edges, tie a bow. Ignore if you used elastic.
